New Delhi: The Central government is working closely with Andhra Pradesh for the construction of a permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Petroleum Energy (IIPE) at Vangali village, Sabbavarammandal, Visakhapatnam.
The campus will be built over 201.8 acres, out of which a mutation was carried out for 157.36 acre in the name of IIPE in January 2022. However, around 26 acres are scattered across the total earmarked land and are under litigation in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. Construction of the institute will begin after the cases are settled.
Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas Hardeep S Puri recently wrote to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, urging him to settle the issue immediately, official sources told Bizz Bizz.
The IIPE has been functioning since 2016-17 academic year under the mentorship of IIT-Kharagpur.
The original timeline for completion of the campus will be up to 2022-23 at the estimated cost of Rs655.46 crore. The tender has been finalized by the Central Public Works Department.
Along with the Central government, the IIPE is also pursuing the matter with the State government of Andhra Pradesh for early settlement of court cases.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajya Sabha MP GVL Narasimha Rao had raised the issue and brought it to the notice of the local authorities during his visit to Visakhapatnam district earlier this year.
An architectural firm, based in Mumbai, is already working on the designs and master plan of the campus. The permanent campus of the IIPE will be built in two phases, sources said.
According to the IIPE website, the objective of setting it up was to meet the quantitative and qualitative gaps and to supply skilled manpower for the petroleum sector. The institute also aims to boost the research activities needed for the growth of the sector.
"Learn, Experience, and Implement is what IIPE strives for and inculcates the same in the students," the website says. "The IIPE is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt of India, and is backed by public sector oil and gas giants viz. HPCL, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, and OIL. The top management of these companies constitutes the Governing Council of IIPE along with the academic experts," the website says.
